The influence of carbon source and aeration conditions on YLA (black bars), YEtOH (grey bars) and QLA (empty circles) in IBB14LA1 (a) and IBB14LA1_5 (b). Experiments were conducted in glucose-(YG) or xylose-(YX) based media under aerobic (_AE), anaerobic (_AN) or microaerophilic (_MA) conditions, as indicated. Data for YX_AE (marked with asterisk) were determined for 41 h of conversion time, before lactic acid uptake started (Fig. 5a and Table 1). Data for YX_MA (marked with double asterisk) represent parameters for phase II of the bioreactor conversion (Fig. 6 and Table 1). Data and error bars represent the mean values and the spread of biological duplicates. Data for YG_AE, YG_AN and YX_AN were taken from [20]
